Insulin Resistance and Blood Sugar in Perimenopause

What insulin resistance actually is

Insulin resistance means your cells answer the insulin doorbell more slowly. Insulin rings, glucose waits at the door, and the pancreas responds by ringing louder: making more insulin to get the same job done.

For years, that extra insulin keeps blood sugar looking normal on labs. When the pancreas can no longer keep up, glucose starts to drift. First a creeping A1c, then prediabetes, and for some women, type 2 diabetes. The drift is slow, which is why it arrives as a surprise at a checkup rather than as a symptom you can feel.

Why perimenopause triggers it

Estradiol, your main form of estrogen, quietly supported your metabolism for decades. It helped muscle, liver, and fat tissue respond to insulin and take up glucose. When estradiol declines, two things happen at once.

A few notes on putting these in order.

Start with strength. Muscle is where most of your blood sugar goes after a meal. Two or three sessions a week of strength training in perimenopause rebuilds the very tissue the transition erodes. It is the most protective habit on the list.

Then build the plate. Protein at every meal defends muscle. Fiber, aiming near 30 grams a day from vegetables, beans, and whole grains, slows glucose absorption.

Then walk after eating. Ten minutes, at a comfortable pace, right after the meal. It is the cheapest glucose tool there is.
