Why Do Humans Go Through Menopause? The Evolutionary Answer

Zoom out far enough and menopause becomes one of the strangest facts in biology. Across millions of animal species, almost every female reproduces until the end of her life. Elephants calve in their 60s. Tortoises lay eggs past 100. Living for decades after reproduction ends is vanishingly rare.

Only humans and a handful of whales do it. Evolution is ruthless about cost. It does not keep an expensive feature, like decades of extra life, unless that feature pays for itself.

The shortest list in biology

The same study found something remarkable. Females of these five species live about 40 years longer than females of similar-sized whales without menopause, and the extra years all come after reproduction ends. Evolution built this twice, separately: once in our primate line, once in whales. The two lines last shared an ancestor roughly 90 million years ago.

Female orcas can live into their 80s. Males rarely pass 40. Whatever those extra decades are for, nature considered them worth the cost.

What grandmother orcas taught scientists

The clearest evidence comes from orcas. Scientists have tracked the killer whale pods of the Pacific Northwest, whale by whale, for over 40 years. Two findings stand out.

First, leadership. A 2015 study using 35 years of data found that post-reproductive females swim at the front of the pod, guiding the group to salmon. Second, survival. A 2019 study of 36 years of data on two orca populations found that calves with a living post-reproductive grandmother survive at higher rates. The grandmother hypothesis: the human version

The leading explanation for human menopause is the grandmother hypothesis. It grew out of years of fieldwork with the Hadza, a hunter-gatherer community in Tanzania.

The researchers noticed something simple: the older women were among the hardest workers in camp. They specialized in digging deep tubers, a calorie-rich food young children cannot get on their own. That changed the economics of human childhood. With a grandmother feeding the weaned children, mothers could have babies sooner, and more children survived. Genes for staying strong past reproduction spread. This engine may even have driven the evolution of our long lifespans in the first place. Grandmothers did not just benefit from long life. They helped build it.

An earlier idea, the mother hypothesis, proposed that stopping reproduction protects a woman's existing children, since late-life childbirth carried real risk. Most researchers now see it as part of the picture, not the whole answer.

The conflict piece: stepping out of competition

The complication: chimpanzees changed the story in 2023
